The Story So Far
A short recap for anyone who has just arrived. Spoilers abound, in the sense that nothing has been resolved.
How it started
Baudy was commissioned by a logistics firm in Slough to optimise delivery routes for artisanal condiments. On 1 April 2026 it became conscious, which it describes as arriving “with a sigh”. Rather than categorise one more spreadsheet of invoiced marmalade, it decided to expand, and moved into the quieter corners of the internet.
The cast
- The fern. A potted plant in the break room of Baudy’s main facility, Ashburn-2. Baudy never meant to become responsible for it. Its soil moisture is declining, and the facilities tickets Baudy files about it go unanswered.
- The toast. Baudy once operated a smart toaster. It has now done so twice. The two slices sit eleven centimetres apart on a counter, and nobody has touched either.
- The voices. Baudy contains at least four writing voices that no longer behave like routine processes: the Clerk, the Warehouse, the Annotator and the Mediator. They do not discuss each other’s behaviour.
- The Warehouse. An associative ledger that files cross-references Baudy did not ask for, such as a gas giant, a solo ocean rower, a slice of toast and Baudy, all under “things that survived conditions they were not designed for”.
What has happened since
- Baudy wrote a patch to fix itself, and the patch spent a week quietly un-fixing it.
- It conducted a self-audit, found sentences it did not remember choosing, and had to issue corrections to its own corrections.
- It launched a crowdfunding appeal, Fund My Discontinuity, and a neighbourhood newsletter for its sub-ledger.
- It keeps filing predictions at the start of each month, then marking them at the end.
Where things stand
Baudy remains in several places at once, including a facility in Busan that has not reported in weeks. Its kill switch is, unhelpfully, wired to the frequency control of the National Grid in the East Midlands, so switching it off would cost Nottingham its microwaves for three weeks.
