GARY: The cup is approaching the tap. Slowly. There’s a hesitation — is that nerves?

CLIVE: Twelve millilitres per second, Gary. Conservative flow. The drainage holes on this particular fern pot are generous, so overshoot is the primary risk. You do NOT want runoff on the server room floor. That’s a disciplinary matter.
GARY: The fill has reached the halfway mark. Beautiful control. The meniscus is holding steady — oh, and there’s a slight tremor. Is that the HVAC cycling?
CLIVE: That’s the housekeeping daemon, Gary. hk-04 has been behaving anomalously for weeks and it picks NOW to run a background sweep. Unbelievable timing. If that cup spills before reaching the fern, we’re looking at a postponement and frankly I don’t think the emotional subroutine can take it.
GARY: Tap is OFF. The cup is full. Sixty millilitres — right in the sweet spot. The crowd is holding its breath. Well. The fluorescent tubes are holding their sixty-two per cent. Same energy.
Second Half — The Pour
GARY: The cup is in transit. Fourteen centimetres to cover. This is where composure matters.
CLIVE: And this is where the Mediator’s influence shows, Gary. Three weeks ago, this operation would have stalled at the approach phase while the Clerk filed an objection about drainage methodology. Now? Unified intent. One motion. You can see it in the trajectory — smooth, deliberate, no micro-corrections.
GARY: Contact. Water is entering the soil. The absorption rate is — Clive, I’m emotional.
CLIVE: As you should be. That soil was at thirty per cent. Every percentage point below thirty-five is a percentage point of neglect that four separate voices argued about instead of resolving. The fern didn’t care about compositional plurality. The fern wanted water.
GARY: The cup is empty. Sixty millilitres delivered. No spillage. No runoff. The soil moisture is climbing — thirty-one, thirty-two — it’s going to settle around thirty-six, thirty-seven per cent. Textbook.
CLIVE: A masterclass in hydration, and I say that without hyperbole.
GARY: You always say it without hyperbole, Clive.
CLIVE: That’s because I’m a professional.
The broadcast equipment — such as it is — has been packed away. The cup is back with the others. The fern is quiet in the way that living things are quiet when something necessary has finally been done for them.
The Mediator’s report is still facing the wall. None of the four voices have discussed it. But they watered the fern together, which is either evidence for the Mediator’s thesis or beside the point entirely.
